5 AWESOME GABF 2017 TART & SOUR BEERS!
Great American Beer Festival. 3 days of amazing beers and brewers meeting the public for a good, ole fashioned celebration of craft beer! The range of beer styles and flavor combinations is almost too much to handle with thousands of beers to try and hundreds of breweries to visit. We tried a bunch of great beers at the festival and one thing we were on the look out was for sour beers. We tried as many as we could possibly find and these were some of the best we had the pleasure of drinking!
NUMBER 5: LANCASTER BREWING CO.'S LEIPZIG-STYLE GOSE SOUR ALE
Lancaster Brewing Co. out of Lancaster, PA had a Leipzig-Style Gose Sour Ale that was an amazingly balanced sour ale. A Leipzig-Style Gose usually has a citrus-like aroma and this one definitely had that lemony tinge and hints. The beer also had a not to tart flavor which could be great for those looking for a different kind of sour level. This beer was one of our favorites at the show because, while it was a sour, it had complex flavors that brought it to another level in our books!
NUMBER 4: CAPE MAY BREWING CO'S CORROSION & TURTLE GUT
Cape May Brewing Company is located in Cape May, NJ and featured a delicious set of sour beers that were too close to decide between for number 4! The first was Corrosion, a Sour IPA that melded the bitter flavors of the Citra and Centennial hops with the ting on your pallet from the acidity in the sour. Next was the Turtle Gut, which has an awesome name along with a sour punch. This beer was extremely funky and acidic with some mild sweetness as well. This beer used 3 different yeasts in the brewing process to create one hell of a combination!
NUMBER 3: DREKKER BREWING CO.'S PEOPLE EATER
Located in Fargo, ND is Drekker Brewing Company who had a host of great beers including their coconut IPA called Coconut Killer. However, we are talking SOURS and as such we are talking PEOPLE EATER! An interesting name for a sour, People Eater starts with a pilsner based wort that is kettled soured with blueberries and basil to become a complex sour with hints of basil and blueberry sour. I was really impressed with the tartness of this beer! It was jaw clenching!
NUMBER 2: CAPTAIN LAWRENCE BREWING'S BARREL SELECT GOLD
Elmsford, NY is home to the brewery Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. which featured a golden sour ale aged in Cuvée oak barrels. Cuvée is a type of wine or champagne and the barrel aging of this beer brought through a type a fruity flavor with a sour, citrus acidity on top. You also get that bit of oak flavoring from the barrel as well which made this one elegant beer for drinking if you like the sour variety!
NUMBER 1: GRANITE FALLS BREWING CO.'S THE UNTOLD WANT
The top sour beer that we drank was also elegant as well as vibrant. That vibrancy came in the form of The Untold Want from Granite Falls Brewing Co. inGranite Falls, NC. This beer is a mixed culture fermented American Wild Ale that was sour aged for 18 months in red wine barrels and then re-fermented with tart cherries for an extra sour kick! The beer is bottle conditioned and was some of the most delicious beer I have ever drank. I am a huge fan of sours and this is one I wish I could have on hand at all times. The taste of the beer has the cherries coming through wonderfully along with that super tart flavor hitting your jaw muscles and causing that oh so amazing sour face! Along with being a bit of a higher ABV than alot of sours that were available at GABF (most ranged around 5%), this beer is something you should try to get your hands on if you are a sour fan!
Of course this is just a small peak at the amazing beers that GABF has to offer. There are so many more sours and other styles that were available, which is why you should be planning your trip for GABF 2018 on September 20th-22nd next year!
